Poha

Poha is a popular Indian breakfast dish. It is super nutritious and a very healthy option for the breakfast. It is light and full of natural flavours.

I have not always been a fan of Poha. I changed by mind when we were living in Bhopal (M.P) where I encountered this dish quite frequently and it was much better and tastier, thanks to the local/traditional recipes.

I recall the days, we travelled from Bhopal to Indore (often on the weekends), halfway through the journey, we would pass a small town ‘Sonakatcha/Sonakachi’. Each and every traveller for sure stayed there for a while. The reason behind this was the delectable light, fluffy, slightly sweet, melt in mouth type ‘Poha’.

In a big cauldron shopkeepers placed the heaps of poha covered with a garnishing of coriander, so appealing and attractive, that none could resist it.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups poha/beaten rice
  • 1/4 cup soaked groundnuts
  • 1/4 cup corn
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped onion
  • 1 diced tomato
  • 1 potato cut in small squares
  • 5-6 slited green chillies
  • Some chopped fresh green coriander
  • Some curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of cumin
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. First soak the Poha for a minute then immediately drain the water through a sieve.
  2. In a non-stick pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves and onions and saute it till the onions becomes translucent. Then add potatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and cover the pot with lid on slow heat.
  3. After4-5 minutes add tomatoes, green chillies and saute for 2 minutes then add peanuts, corn and soaked poha. Saute well and add some coriander and salt.
  4. Serve hot with a dash of lime.
