The month of Muharram is the first month of lslamic lunar calendar. On the 10th day of this month, which falls on 21 September this year, Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad was martyred alongwith his 72 followers and kinsmen in the battle of Karbala, which is in the present day Iraq. The event took place on 10th October 680 AD.
The opposite army put restrictions on supply of water from river Euphrates to the camp of Imam Hussain. Bravely enduring the pangs of thirst and hunger Imam Hussain laid down his life alongwith his followers.
It is said that at the end, the survivors of Imam Hussain camp put all the leftover provisions of pulses, wheat, barley, rice together to prepare food for themselves.
The modern day Haleem or Khichra is prepared every year in memory of that last dish prepared in Karbala.
In lndia haleem is very popular in Hyderabad and Lucknow. It is one of those delicacies which is specially prepared in middle East, Central Asia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh during the month of Muharram and Ramadan.
Haleem is a wholesome dish made of meat, lentils, broken wheat or barley with lots of spices and served with chopped cilantro or mint, fried onions and lemon wedges.
